Student Services

The Administrators of Instructional and Student Services are divided into Academies to better serve the students of WUHS.  The Academy system is a student-centered team concept, which facilitates parental communication and provides the students with individualized educational services and guidance.

The Academy services included counseling and guidance, attendance management, behavioral, academic and health issues.  The clusters also supervise programs and instruction, staff development, curriculum development, and teacher and program evaluation.  In addition to overseeing the day-today activities associated with student life at WUHS, the administrators of Instructional and Student Services also direct the following programs:

Tutorials

WUHS provides tutoring services to students in need of extra help, at no extra charge to the student.

Counseling and Guidance

The Guidance Learning Specialists provide personal, social, academic and behavioral counseling to WUHS students (WUHS has a very low student to counselor ratio).

Phone Mate

When a student is absent for the day or for any period during the day, Phone Mate, our communication system, automatically dials the student’s home to report the absence.  This is one way that we communicate with parents regarding student attendance.  In addition, Phone Mate is used to send messages about upcoming activities.

School Safety

Because the safety of our students is of utmost importance at WUHS, we place of lot of emphasis on school security.  In addition to maintaining a closed campus, which allows only authorized person on campus and keeps the students on the WUHS campus for the entire school day, WUHS employs two full-time security guards.  Random visits to the school by contraband detection dogs are used to detect alchohol, non-prescription drugs, gunpowder and narcotics on the campus grounds.  The Sheriff assigned to our campus is on site several times a week and reachable by phone at all times.

School Attendance Review Board

The School Attendance Review Board (SARB) consists of representatives from law enforcement, public schools, probation and Mental Health Services/Child Protective Services.  The SARB convenes regularly to review attendance records and to meet with students regarding excessive absences.  In addition, the school has two home liaisons that perform daily home visits regarding attendance.
